Is Polymer Clay Safe?
Share
Although there are plenty of myths surrounding the safety of polymer clay, it is non-toxic and perfectly safe!
The main polymer clay brands all have been tested, and have been certified to be non-toxic when used correctly. What does it mean to use it correctly?
- Cure the clay fully at the correct temperature to avoid burning (I do this for all of my pieces).
- Do not put polymer clay items in the dishwasher.
- Do not use bleach or solvents on finished polymer clay.
- If the clay needs to be cleaned, hand wash it with a mild dish soap like Dawn.
Clay cannot be tested for food safety by the manufacturer because the clay is not made to be used for food (it is created to make fun art!)Therefore the burden of testing for use with food rests with the sculptor (me). As such, I do NOT recommend using my clay items for anything that will touch food. That said, you can use an item that is decorated with polymer clay to eat with, such as a mug with clay on the outside. As long as the clay does not come into contact with the food you are good to go!
